What is Namnesia Antidote?

What is Namnesia Antidote?

Namnesia: forgetting the lessons of Vietnam.

Vietnambien Syndrome: sleepwalking through war with delusions of inevitable victory reminiscent of Vietnam (also called Vietnambulism, a type of somnambulism peculiar to neo-conservatives).

When a fellow poster, anniefey, made a post at the TV News Lies Board about these two syndromes I was struck by the pervasiveness of this type of thinking when it comes to the occupation of Iraq. The warmongers in the administration and Congress not only suffer from Namnesia but have gone out of their way to spread the infection. When George "War Criminal" Bush talks about not repeating the mistakes of Vietnam, he is stating our error was withdrawing prematurely and leaving only 58,168 known dead Americans. He is determined to "stay the course" indefinitely in Iraq, no matter the cost in human lives and resources. When anniefey made her post it was with two unhappy coincidences; the five-year anniversary of the Iraq invasion and the occasion of the 4,000th American causality. We had once again failed to learn from history and were doomed to repeating the same errors.

Posts on this blog begin on March 23rd. In 2008, this was both Easter and the date of the aforementioned 4,000th causality. The names posted on this blog are from the Vietnam War Memorial Wall as extracted from a now defunct website. They are a matter of public record. Any errors in the extraction are mine and I apologize in advance for them. While a laudable goal would be to have a posting for everyone whose name appears on The Wall, it is just not feasible for a one-man operation. What I posted for each day of the year are two lists of these names; the first commemorating the date of death and the second celebrating the birth of those who gave their lives. I encourage anyone to post comments on these individuals, when such a comment is posted, I hope to in the future, create an individual post with more detailed information for that person. This will give family, friends and supporters the chance to collectively honor and remember these fallen service men.

The information on this blog will also appear in my This Day in History blog daily posts at some future timeframe. I hope this double posting will give some additional exposure to these men and women while aiding in combating Namnesia.

This post will be of the "bloggy" type. I will try to let users of the blog know what is happening and what to expect in the near future. Updates will be made to this post to keep everyone current.

Namnesia Antidote's Core Posts of Causality and Birth Dates are complete. These may be accessed via the Core Posts linking calendar. These consist of 367 posts, one for each day of the calendar plus an extra for those whose birthdates where unknown.

24 August 2008
Work is complete on the Age at Death posts. It is fully indexed and I might try color-coding the degree (average number per month lived) of causalities next.

Namnesia Antidote has had about 4,000 visitors to date. My thanks to those who have helped spread the word, especially my friends Helen and Harry at Unknown News.

21 January 2009
I have begun work on re-sequencing postings so they appear in their proper order in the archive listing. This may take as long as a month. The original website that I extracted the data from has gone dark and I am updating the posts to remove reference to the now defunct website.

9 February 2009
Re-sequencing and reference removal complete.

Message Paul Krzynowek's home should be listed as Housatonic, Massachusetts. I believe that it is incorrectly listed as Maine.

Yes, the hometown was listed as Housatonic, ME but you appear correct with research showing that the only Housatonic is in Massachusetts. Official records remain incorrect but this correction is shown on the blog on the November 1 and December 6 posts.

Comment and Answer from February 5 Post:

The Army lists PFC Roy Louis Ryse's birthday as Feb 5, 1944. However, the correct date is Feb. 7, 1944.

Thank you for remembering him. He was the first boy from our town/school (Hawthorne, CA) to die in Viet Nam.

I have noted this comment, showing official birth date and corrected birth date in four posts on this blog:

1. February 5 post (Official birth date listing.)
2. February 7 post (Corrected birth date listing.)
3. November 17 post (Date of death listing.)
4. Age at Death 21 Years in 10th month (Showing life official lifespan of 7956 days and corrected lifespan of 7954 days.)

Since this comment was from an Anonymous source and I have no way of independently verifying the new information, I list both birth dates with notations. Additionally I have placed the original comment and my answer on the other three posts.

What is an Age at Death Listing?

What is an Age at Death Listing?

One of the pieces of information I found difficult to extract from the now defunct website was the age of the service personnel when they were killed. The following lists are my final attempt at presenting this very same information. I have made some arbitrary assumptions on just what age is represented by the number of days. In any event, the years listed herein are a good approximation.

I am struck that nearly 44% of the casualties were not yet 21 when they died. This war killed the best and brightest of our young. Adding three years to the age or less than 24, accounts for nearly 75% of the causalities. If anyone has any ideas or requests on presenting these lists of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, please don't hesitate to contact me at aproudliberal@cox.net.
